Land of Extremes

Australia is often described as a ‘land of extremes’, and Tasmania, where I was for the last couple of weeks, exhibited this property in microcosm. There were (and remain) severe wildfires on the west coast of the island, while the east coast saw the worst flooding in 50 years.

I was staying on the east side, and the day of the rain that caused the aforementioned flooding was spent with students wandering around Maria Island (pronounced “muh-rai-uh” for some reason).

Not to worry, we were in good spirits overall, and the worst thing we had to deal with was a couple of soggy tents when we returned to camp. Everything dried out by Tuesday when clear weather returned. That said, I look forward to returning to explore more of Maria Island in better conditions one day.
